TYPES OF MOUNTAINS:
-Volcanic mountains: form when molten rock from deep inside the earth erupts through the crust and piles up on itself (mount st. Helens in Washington state and mount fuji in japan) - Dome Mountains: when magma pushes the crust up but hardens before erupting onto the surface. (black hills of south Dakota and the Adirondack mountains of NY) - Plateau Mountains: similar to dome mountains, but form as colliding tectonic plates push up the land without folding or faulting. |
MOUNTAIN INFLUENCES
-mountains can have a major influence on climate and storms of nearby areas - mountains can protect people from invasions. - It is hard for invasions to come about when it is blacked by a massive landform or highland that they must pass. - When mountains have influences on climate, sometime high elevation results in snow on top of mountains because it is so cold at its peak. |
WHERE ARE MOUNTAINS FOUND?
-on every continent and even below oceans.
-People live in mountains! One tenth of the world’s people live on mountains -More than half of the world’s water is found in mountains and all rivers that are major in the world are produced from mountain sources. |
